Hay Net? YES!

This drives me crazy!  We bought this roll of hay less than two days ago! It's amazing how fast my two horses can spread it! Lucy wasn't so bad, but Dixie, pictured here, literally SHOVELS the hay out onto the ground! And every day I either pitch it back onto their pile or over the fence for the cow. Either way, it's alot of extra work - and waste!

That's why I was so excited to have my husband lend a hand and learn about this hay net. It's made from heavy duty nylon fibers - comparable to hockey netting, treated with a UV protectant. Made in the USA, the company claims that it should last 5+years in outdoor weather conditions. They make all sizes, from square bales to round rolls, and the cinch is included. It is recommended that if your horse is shod (mine aren't) you should use a traditional hay ring as well as the net to prevent horseshoes from getting caught in the netting.

To use the hay net it's just a matter of encasing your bale or roll of hay in the netting and cinching it up.

As you can see, it's quite easy to use - especially with a friend.

Once the hay is in the netting, cinch the drawstring, stuff the extra rope into the hole and roll the hay over on top of the opening.

Then let the horses out. A slow feeder hay net will ensure less waste and inevitably save time and money.

We're sold! We'll be ordering ours today from  www.cinchchix.com

  2. Hey Marcy,
Do the horses and cows not cut the net with their teeth? Love the idea!!!

    1. Hi Lisa - Great question! I know my horses have no problem with the net and after almost a year, it shows no wear from teeth, but I wasn't sure about cows so I presented the question to Kelly at Cinch Chix, the makers of the hay net. Here's her response:

      Marcy,
Our experience with cattle using the nets has been very positive. I have cattle personally and I have never had any sort of negative with using one. I've used the 6' original, not the cattle net, because my cows have always been in with my horses. They are very efficient eaters on it because they use their tongues rather than grabbing the net with their teeth like the horses do. I've never had cows get tangled in the net, nor have I heard of any of our customers having this problem. Everyone to our knowledge using our nets with cattle is very satisfied (we haven't heard a lot, which usually means they are working as intended...no news is good news, right?)
We did get one couple from Southern MN who ordered a custom one for a feeder and their cows (in their opinion) were not adjusting well to it. The cows had just calved and were leery of it. We offered suggestions to them, such as uncovering half the round making it so some hay was accessible without the net on it and naturally it would have seemed some of the herd would have gotten pushed down to the part of the feeder where the net was. But they were very concerned about the cows milk supply with new babies and didn't really want to put the time or effort into acclimating the cows to the net. They were convinced their cows just wouldn't eat out of it and then wouldn't produce milk. We are certain though if they'd have given the cows the appropriate adjustment time, it would have worked well for them. It has worked well for several other customers. They were also upset that we wouldn't refund their money. But all custom orders are FINAL sale and non-returnable and they knew this going into the purchase. Hope that info helps you with your blog.

      Blessings,
      Kelly @ Cinch Chix

  3. After I originally left a comment I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are

Perhaps there is a way you can remove me from that service?
    Kudos!
